Advisor
Selection and
Matching

  • To ensure the optimal matching between students and research groups, the Graduate School operates the following advisor selection and matching procedures.

Prior Contact with Prospective Advisors

  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact prospective advisors (research groups) in advance to discuss research interests and assess mutual fit, which may be helpful for conducting research after admission.
  • Prior contact with an advisor does not guarantee admission nor determine admission decisions. Final admission decisions are made in accordance with the department’s official admissions procedures and regulations.

Advisor Matching Process

  • Among applicants who pass the first-stage evaluation (document review), those proceeding to the second-stage evaluation (interview) will be separately notified to submit a “Statement of Intended Research Group.”
  • Applicants are required to list 1–3 preferred advisors (research groups) in order of priority on the statement.
  • Advisor matching will be conducted by giving priority to the applicant’s stated preferences, while also taking into consideration laboratory capacity and departmental regulations.

Timing of Advisor Assignment

  • Advisor assignment will be finalized after completion of all admission procedures, including the second-stage interview.
  • Final results will be announced on the official admission decision date, and individual notifications will be provided to admitted students.
