Transitioning from academic research to the biotechnology industry offers a unique perspective on how scientific ideas are translated into therapeutic innovations. In this seminar, I will introduce the research culture within the U.S. biotech sector and share my career path from graduate school and postdoctoral training to my current role in industry. I will also highlight the discovery work taking place at Sutro Biopharma, a company advancing next-generation antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs) through a fully cell-free expression platform.

Sutro’s XpressCF® platform enables the precise incorporation of non-natural amino acids at defined sites within an antibody, allowing the generation of homogeneous, site-specific ADCs. Building on these capabilities, Sutro has pioneered dual-payload ADCs that incorporate two distinct cytotoxic warheads on a single antibody, a strategy aimed at overcoming drug resistance and expanding the range of treatable cancers. Through this seminar, I hope to provide students with insight into how industrial research teams collaborate, innovate, and translate emerging technologies into impactful therapeutics, while sharing practical reflections on navigating a scientific career in industry.
